BHSO: Mozart Requiem – Performing Arts Center of Rapid City
The symphony is joined by the Dakota Choral Union for a performance of Mozart’s final masterwork.
Requiem in D minor
So much has been made of the circumstances surrounding Mozart’s last composition, the Requiem, that it is sometimes difficult to separate fact from dramatic fantasy. The undisputed facts are that six months before Mozart’s death, a tall, thin stranger dressed in gray visited him with an anonymous letter commissioning a requiem. Mozart was to complete the work in the shortest time possible, and he was to make no attempt to uncover the identity of the man buying the music. The strange way in which this offer was made and the peculiar appearance of the person bringing him the commission, made a profound impression. Suffering as he was from physical disorders that were soon to become fatal, and from mental anguish brought on by debts and frustration, Mozart soon became obsessed with the thought that this messenger was a visitor from the other world come to write his own requiem before it was too late.
