Wild Bill Me

Wild Bill was Deadwood's most famous resident, even though he was only in town a few short weeks. James Butler Hickok arrived in Deadwood, along with Colorado Charlie Utter and Calamity Jane, in July of 1876.  He was a well-known gambler and gunslinger, participating in many shootouts before his arrival in Deadwood. He was killed on August 2, 1876 when Jack McCall shot him from behind while playing poker. When he died, Wild Bill was holding a pair of aces and eights, that series of cards became known to poker players all around the world as the “Dead Man’s Hand.”

These days you’ll find the likeness of Wild Bill all over Historic Deadwood – reenactors, photos, art, signs, life-sized cutouts, displays in museums, and many more. Now you can explore that history through a fun, new game! #WildBillMe is a selfie treasure hunt in Historic Deadwood (and the surrounding area). Find Bill (any likeness will do) and take a selfie with him. Click it. Post it. And CLAIM YOUR PRIZES at one of Deadwood’s two manned Visitor Centers!

Bring your phone or camera into one of Deadwood’s Visitor Centers (501 Main Street or 3 Siever Street) and show us your #WildBillMe selfie collection to claim prizes. There are three levels of completion – 10 selfies wins a WildBillMe sticker, 15 and you’ll get a magnet, track down 25 Wild Bills and we’ll give you the first two prizes AND $5 in Deadwood Gold Bucks redeemable at over 30 locations in Deadwood. Trust us, it won’t be that hard. Bill is EVERYWHERE in Deadwood, you just need to explore a little to find him! We’ll make your first one easy – use the #WildBillMe filter on SnapChat to get started.

But that’s not all! There are bonus prizes up for grabs each month – things like hotel stays, gift cards, free meals, Gold Bucks and other Deadwood-themed gifts. To qualify post about your #WildBillMe adventure on social media by using the #WildBillMe hashtag on Instagram or posting your photo to the Historic Deadwood Facebook page. Every post is another entry into the contest. The more pictures you share, the better your chances to win! Every month we’ll randomly choose winners of the bonus prizes and contact you through social media.
