Attractions
Adams Museum
The oldest museum in the Black Hills, the Adams Museum at 54 Sherman Street originally had a Victorian cabinet-of-curiosities philosophy: collect anything that looks cool and put it in a glass case. The museum still has an eclectic collection, including a one-of-a-kind plesiosaur fossil, Potato Creek Johnny’s massive gold nugget, the mysterious Thoen Stone, and a mining locomotive. The recently renovated museum features modern displays that use artifacts to tell the important stories of Deadwood’s past. The lower level’s natural history exhibits are hands-on, perfect for kids. Open year-round. Admission to the museum is free, donations are appreciated.

The Firearms Exhibit tells a layered story of guns both in the Black Hills and throughout American history with nearly 100 long arms and 20 handguns on display. The story of each gun is supported by a fascinating background of photographs, diagrams, and illustrations. There is also a gift shop and gold panning in the lobby of the museum.
